NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - An intruder armed with a fire extinguisher barricaded himself at a National City home Friday morning, refusing police orders to surrender but finally relenting after standoff.

10News learned a homeowner called police at around 4:20 a.m. to report an unknown man in the backyard of his home at 243 E. 16th Street.

Police arrived to find the man barricaded inside an outdoor bathroom and screaming at officers.

During the standoff, police fired a series of non-lethal pepper balls towards the bathroom in an attempt to subdue the man, but he refused to get out.

After about an hour, officers -- assisted by a K9 -- used a battering ram to force their way into the bathroom and detained the man.

Officers believed the unidentified man was either on drugs or suffering from mental problems. He was loaded into an ambulance with a spit bag over his head and taken to the hospital.

Details on why the man entered the home remain unclear.
