Hundreds of workers walked off the job at the UC San Diego Medical Center - forcing patients to cross the picket line Thursday.
On the picket line - electricians, painters and other skilled workers, all asking for higher wages. Their last salary increase was two years ago in 2014. They've been working without a contract ever since.
The picketers said they gave the medical center fair warning and asked officials to cancel non-emergency procedures. Since the facility did not oblige, they blocked the entrance.
Patients we talked to said the picketing did not affect much inside the building.
However, things did get tense when one union representative refused to move when asked by police, and was put in handcuffs.
According to campus police, she was arrested for obstructing traffic and not obeying orders. She was later cited and released.
