MIRA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - One person is dead after a vehicle struck a tree and caught fire in Mira Mesa Tuesday.

The car struck a tree on Branicole Lane and Mercy Road just after 4 p.m., according to San Diego Police.

One person was confirmed dead inside the car.

SDPD said they believe the single-vehicle accident occurred after the driver was traveling at a fast rate of speed westbound on Mercy Rd. and lost control, swerving passenger-side first into the tree. The car immediately burst into flames.

Police said the fire has left the victim unrecognizable and they are continuing to investigate whether anyone else was in the vehicle.

A Sig Alert has been issued for Mercy Road as emergency crews investigate and clean up the scene.
