NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - Two people are dead and two are in the hospital with injuries after shootings at an apartment complex Saturday in the South Bay.

National City Police and Fire crews responded to the call of an active shooter before 10 a.m. Saturday at an apartment complex in the 1000 block of East 8th Street. San Diego SWAT officers were also called to the scene.

Police said an armed individual had barricaded themselves in the home, prompting a standoff with SWAT officers.

Witnesses told 10News that two people had been shot and a third person was seen covered in blood, before running into the home when police arrived. Witnesses said they heard about ten rounds of gunfire.

The incident ended just before 5:30 p.m. when an injured man walked out of the home.

National City Police Captain Jose Tellez said officers are trying to determine which person was responsible for the shootings.

A search of the home turned up narcotics and between two and four firearms, said Tellez.

The area around E. 8th St. at M Avenue was closed, as emergency medical crews and authorities swarmed the surrounding neighborhoods. National City officials asked residents from E. 8th St. and Highland Ave. to E. 8th St. and M Ave. to shelter in place.  The streets near the crime scene will remain closed until midnight, according to police.

It's not yet clear how the incident began.
