DEL MAR, Calif. – Authorities are searching for the driver of a parked BMW that was struck by a freight train in Del Wednesday night.

At about 10:30 p.m., a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train was headed north in the 1500 block of Coast Boulevard when the conductor saw a BMW parked on the tracks. He hit the emergency brakes but could not stop in time and collided into the car. Emergency responders found the BMW empty. No one aboard the train was hurt.

The conductor told San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies that just moments before the crash, he saw a woman in a red dress standing near the BMW. Deputies and Del Mar Fire Department crews searched the neighborhood, but were unable to locate the driver.

The BMW 328i had no plates, just a dealership tag from Auto City. The car is registered in Chula Vista, deputies said. Authorities are unsure if it broke down or was intentionally stopped there.

Deputies said it appears the car was driven up onto the tracks.
