A 36-year-old man driving a motorcycle had his right foot severed after he ran a red light and crashed into a Dodge vehicle across from Mission Bay Saturday afternoon, a San Diego police officer said.

It happened at 5:03 p.m. on northbound Nimitz Boulevard at the Sunset Cliffs on-ramp to the Ocean Beach (8) Freeway, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.

The 52-year-old man driving the Dodge stopped at a red light, then started into the intersection when the light turned green, Heims said.

The light was red for the man driving the Suzuki motorcycle on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and he ran the light, hitting the front of the Dodge and severing his right foot, the officer said.

"Alcohol was a factor," Heims said.
