SAN DIEGO -- A man was found suffering from a head wound Tuesday in downtown San Diego, and police were working to determine whether he was the victim of a crime.

Someone called for help shortly before 1:30 a.m. and told police a man was down and bleeding on Broadway near Eighth Avenue, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Tansey said. It was not immediately clear if the man had been assaulted or had fallen. He was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police told 10News the victim was a homeless man in his 50s or 60s.

The investigation prompted authorities to close Broadway to all vehicle traffic between Eighth and Ninth avenues, Tansey said. The road was reopened at about 5 a.m.
