Man found stabbed to death on Mission Valley sidewalk

SAN DIEGO -- A man found dead on a Mission Valley sidewalk Sunday morning was stabbed, an autopsy determined.

San Diego police identified the victim Tuesday as 30-year-old Michael Bernard Nichols of Gary, Ind. Nichols died of a single stab wound to the upper torso. 

Officers received a call at 9:25 a.m. regarding a man lying on the sidewalk near the Kings Inn Hotel, located on the 1300 block of Hotel Circle South.

The man was not breathing and pronounced dead at the scene, said Lt. Ray Valentin of the San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Nichols was the victim of a homicide. 

No suspects have been identified. The investigation is ongoing.
