SAN DIEGO — Tuesday marks the first day that San Diegans can hail a public ride in an autonomous Waymo vehicle.
Waymo is expanding its service across the country to include San Diego, Tampa and Denver starting September 1.
The company says thousands of residents in the San Diego area are already signed up Waymo's services, and new riders will be invited "on a rolling basis."
The service area is about 50 square miles, roughly spanning from Logan Heights to Pacific Beach and from Sunset Cliffs to Normal Heights.
The vehicles will include the company's new Ojai vehicles, which feature plenty of seating, car chargers, and space for luggage.
KGTV recently spoke with community members about the introduction of driverless vehicles to the area. Tourists and San Diegans alike had mixed reactions to the autonomous vehicle rollout.
