SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three inmates were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after a fight broke out at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility Thursday.

According to the prison, the fight broke out just after 11 a.m. Thursday when seven inmates surrounded another inmate and hit him in the head with a cane.

The man who was attacked tried to run away, but was pursued by the other men before authorities say he fought back with an “inmate-manufactured weapon.”

Staff at the prison triggered an alarm and used pepper spray to stop the fight.

Three of the men were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, including gashes to the head and stab wounds to the chest and abdomen.

Another man was treated by prison staff for less severe injuries.
