SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A water contact closure has been issued for all of Imperial Beach and Coronado as sewage pours into the ocean from the Tijuana River.

According to the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health, the closure extends from the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge north through Imperial Beach and Coronado.

Sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary due to recent rainfall, the department says.

The department says it’s observed the contamination of ocean water.

Signs warning of the contamination will remain in the area until sampling indicated the water is safe.

The closure was issued after a day and a half of rain throughout the county. Another round of rain is expected to soak the county Thursday.
