CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - More than a dozen people were forced out their homes late Tuesday night after a driver crashed her car into a fire hydrant at an apartment complex in Chula Vista, causing water to be sent nearly 30 feet into the air.

At around 11:45 p.m., Chula Vista police responded to reports of a geyser spewing water into the air on 3rd Avenue.

The geyser, from a broken fire hydrant, flooded a nearby apartment complex, forcing the evacuation of 16 people from six units, four of which were heavily flooded.

A black car that struck the hydrant tried to leave just after the wreck, but the car's female driver eventually came back to speak with officers. Police questioned the young driver, but she was released.

City crews spent a few hours helping clear the water from the apartments.
