SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man shot in front of an apartment complex near Alvarado Hospital in the College Area died from his injuries, police said.
Gunfire in front of the Iconic on Alvarado apartments on Sterling Verde Drive, located off the 6600 block of Alvarado Road and east of San Diego State University, was reported shortly after 6:15 a.m. Thursday.
Ishi Hampton, 39, was injured in the shooting and transported to the hospital. San Diego police confirmed Hampton died from his wounds.
Police shut down Alvarado Road, between Alvarado Court and Reservoir Drive, Thursday morning due to the investigation.
Officers have not determined the motive for the shooting, but said Hampton had contact with at least two suspects on the 6300 block of Alvarado Road. After the shooting, the suspects ran away.
10News learned officers are looking for three males ranging from their teens to mid-30s wearing hooded sweatshirts and blue jeans in connection with the shooting.
Shortly after 8:30 a.m., police spotted an abandoned red car that is believed to be linked to the shooting on Bancroft Drive at Lamar Street in Spring Valley. The people suspected in the incident were not located.
San Diego State University reached out to students on its twitter feed at 9:45 a.m., posting, "There is lessened police activity in the area. The investigation is ongoing and all operations are back to normal. Again, there was never an immediate threat to campus. As a reminder, you will always receive directions about how to respond during emergencies via SDSU Alert."
