Woman fights off attacker, runs up canyon for help

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating a reported attempted sexual assault in Birdland in which a masked man allegedly attacked a homeless woman.

On Thursday, at around 7:30 p.m., several residents in the 7900 block of Canary Way encountered a woman who had climbed up a canyon behind their backyard. The woman went through a back fence in search of help, the residents said.

The woman, who is homeless, told residents that a man wearing a mask tried to sexually assault her, but she was able to fight him off.

According to residents, the woman was upset and terrified and had scratches on her arms, as she explained what happened. The woman was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Officers on the ground and a police helicopter searched the area but could not find anyone suspicious.
