SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego chapter of the Salvation Army is coming to the aid of federal employees impacted by the ongoing partial government shutdown.
According to the Salvation Army San Diego, furloughed workers can head to seven county Salvation Army Corps Community Centers to access various resources that could help them during the shutdown.
Federal employees may be eligible to receive emergency assistance with utility bills, paying rent, and purchasing groceries and meals.
Capt. Bonita Kelsey of the El Cajon center told 10News, “A furloughed employee did contact us and asked about diapers and how he could get some for his family in need right now.”
Lt. Col. Lee Lescano, the Salvation Army Divisional Secretary for San Diego County, added, “We certainly can provide food, in some cases, utility assistance to sort of help them through this crisis. In some cases, we're able to help with rent or mortgage in very limited cases.”
Salvation Army officials at the El Cajon center said some families have already stopped by seeking assistance. Officials understand that it may be tough for some to even ask for help.
“There are some who, like these federal workers may be, have never asked for help and may be a little reluctant to do so, and that's why we want them to know we're here. We want to help guide them through the process and help them if we can,” Lescano said.
“We are really excited to be able to help in any way that we can,” said Kelsey.
Furloughed workers in need of help can call 619-446-0274 or visit any of the Corps Community Centers listed below. Officials at the centers may ask for government ID.
Hours at each community center may vary, so a call ahead or website visit is suggested.
