SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Women serving time at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility are getting the opportunity to rehabilitate and express themselves through live theater.

The Reflecting Shakespeare program, a partnership with the Old Globe Theater, is a 12-week program where volunteers work with the female inmates, teaching them about Shakespeare and his characters.

The program also allows participants to self-reflect, exploring themes of forgiveness, self-acceptance, and team-building.

On Tuesday, the women preformed “The Winter's Tale,” taking turns playing the roles. In between acts, the women read their written self-reflections.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department says the goal of the program is to give the women a different outlet to express themselves, while working on themselves to become ready for life once they're done serving time.

In 2020, the program will expand to the Donovan Correctional Facility, Juvenile Hall and with reentry populations.
