Man tried to climb into patrol car following shooting, chase in El Cajon, police say

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- One suspect is in custody and two others are outstanding following a shooting and pursuit in El Cajon Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, the incident began just before 3 p.m. on the 100 block of Mollison Avenue when three suspects reportedly approached a man in his 20s standing in a parking lot.

At some point, police say one of the suspects shot the man before leaving the scene with the other two suspects in a white Volkswagen.

A short distance later, police spotted the vehicle and a pursuit ensued. At the time of the chase, police say the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The pursuit ended when police say the driver crashed into a vehicle occupied by two adults and two children on Mollison Avenue and Pepper Drive. They were not injured, police say.

Police were able to arrest the man after he fled on foot and, at some point, tried to get into an unoccupied police vehicle.

The victim was taken to a local trauma center and is being treated for at least one gunshot wound, police say, The two other suspects have not been located.
