SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s a calmer scene on Saturday afternoon with remnants of a crash taped off at the corner of Ebers Street and Bermuda Avenue.
Earlier in the day, San Diego Police received a call for a welfare check and found a man in the middle of Coronado Avenue.
“The officer arrived and contacted a subject in the middle of the street making suicidal statements,” said Juan Marquez, a lieutenant with the sheriff’s homicide unit. “When the individual saw the officer, the individual got inside of his vehicle and a pursuit ensued.”
The sheriff’s office said the man drove a black Mercedes, fleeing from police, driving through stop signs. He eventually crashed into another vehicle.
The man briefly stepped out, continuing to make suicidal statements. He then returned to his car.
“The individual got inside of the vehicle and retrieved a knife,” said Marquez. “The individual lunged at officers, and one officer discharged several rounds from his duty weapon striking the subject.”
The sheriff’s office said paramedics transported the man to a local hospital, and he was pronounced dead at around 10:20 a.m.
The man has not yet been identified, and the investigation is still ongoing.
