SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is considering raising its fares, but the agency is looking for public feedback on the proposal before moving forward.

MTS has made a survey available for the public to get their feelings on price increases. Additionally, community workshops will be held Feb. 18 and 25, and March 5 for more input.

According to the agency, the fare adjustment would help address a budget shortfall of over $120 million annually in the next few years.

“These changes help us to delay that ‘fiscal cliff' until 2030/31,” MTS officials said.

While no fare changes have been approved as of now, MTS proposed raising rates in September 2025.

Officials wanted the fare increase to go up anywhere from 10% to 20%, but they have settled on two proposals.

The first proposal would raise the Adult and SDM Day Pass to $7 and $3.50, respectively. Month passes would rise to $90 and $30, respectively.

The second proposal would change prices a little more.

If MTS were to go through with fare hikes, officials believe it would take effect in the summer or fall.
