ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities in Encinitas are investigating reports of a shark attack at Moonlight Beach, lifeguards confirmed Wednesday night.

Larry Jiles, the Marine Safety Captain for Encinitas, says a surfer received a minor injury and was taken to the hospital. The encounter was reported just before 6 p.m. Jiles said the surfer was not bitten by the shark, though the two made contact in the water.

“He wasn’t sure if he kicked or bumped it, and then he turned around and paddled to the beach,” Jiles said.

The shoreline one mile north and south of the incident were temporarily closed but shortly reopened. Beaches will be open Thursday, though lifeguards have posted signs warning people of the shark encounter.
