Denny Sanford, a major philanthropist who divided his time between La Jolla and Sioux Falls, S.D., has died at 90 years old.

Sanford was known for giving away billions of dollars, including to many San Diego charities. He made major donations to UC San Diego and the Sanford Consortium.

Sanford also gave more than $30 million to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. The donation is one of the single largest donations the zoo has ever received.

The Denny Sanford Elephant Valley was the largest project in the Wildlife Alliance's 109-year history.
