SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Evacuations have been ordered for an area of Mission Beach due to a reported gas leak.

The leak was reported at around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday when a gas main ruptured at Strandway and Yarmouth Court, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue officials. SDG&E said the gas line was three-quarters of an inch wide.

While the cause of the leak was not immediately known, 10News learned firefighters have asked nearby homes and businesses to evacuate. Evacuated streets include Zanzibar Court, Ocean Front Walk, Mission Blvd and Verona Court.

San Diego Gas and Electric says it expects to have the gas controlled by 10 p.m. Wednesday night. Currently, the company says 55 utility workers on scene.

The company added that up to 1,000 customers will lose natural gas service and could remain without the service through the night.

SDG&E also de-energized a power line in the area, leaving 374 customers without power.

Fire officials have asked police to shut down Mission Blvd. south to Pacific Beach Dr. as crews investigate and clear the area.
