SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews Tuesday made progress removing a massive tree that fell onto a Ocean Beach home Monday, killing two people.

Photos of the home taken Tuesday afternoon show the portion of the home that was leveled by the falling tree.

The couple, later identified as Jessica and Troy Nelson of Fargo, North Dakota, were asleep in the vacation rental when the tree fell on the home.

The couple arrived in San Diego Saturday for a trade show and were due to leave Monday.

The incident was reported on the 4400 block of Santa Monica Avenue around 6:15 a.m. Monday.

One of the couple’s relatives was downstairs at the time of the incident and was uninjured.

"I was devastated. I feel so bad, horrified if it was so unnecessary," said neighbor Peggy Harris.

The Torrey Pine was about 75 years old and roughly 100 feet tall, according to an arborist. The large tree may have fallen due to a combination of wind, saturated ground from recent rains and a lack of soil surface.
