CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Lifeguards in Coronado have closed the City’s beach for 48 hours after a swimmer had his swim fin nipped by a juvenile white shark Wednesday, the city said in a news release.
The incident happened during the afternoon Wednesday and, according to Lifeguard Capt. Sean Carey, the swimmer was not harmed but was able to positively identify the type of shark.
Several nearby surfers also witnessed the event and the water was immediately cleared. Carey said the fin had tooth marks as a result of the bite.
“The City of Coronado takes this situation seriously and reminds all beachgoers that there are numerous hazards in the ocean environment including marine life of various kinds,” the city said.
Lifeguards plan to reopen the beach on New Year’s Day.
