Bicyclist killed in collision with Amtrak train in Carlsbad

A BICYCLIST RIDING ON RAILROAD TRACKS IN CARLSBAD DIED AFTER A COLLISION WITH A TRAIN, authorities said. — CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A bicyclist riding on railroad tracks in Carlsbad died after a collision with a train, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. Thursday in an area near Grand Avenue and Washington Street, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s officials said the male bicyclist was riding on the middle of the tracks near Mile Post Marker 229.2 when he struck the side of an Amtrak train that was traveling southbound at about 63 mph.

The unidentified man was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries, sheriff’s officials said.

The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit.
