NATIONAL CITY, Calif. -- A driver sheered a fire hydrant, flooding an intersection, before crashing his car into a tire shop at a National City strip mall overnight Monday.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Plaza Boulevard and Euclid Avenue.

According to National City police, a Ford Fusion traveling east on Plaza Boulevard went through the intersection, veered off the road and struck a fire hydrant, sending water spewing in all directions. The car then drove across the parking lot of a strip mall and slammed into the bay doors of a tire shop’s service area.

The driver was still in the car when officers arrived, police said. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest with what appeared to be minor injuries.

National City Fire Department crews arrived on scene and shut off the water, but not before it left a muddy mess in the parking lot and intersection. No stores were flooded.

Police have not disclosed if the driver was believed to be under the influence of intoxicants.

A financial estimate of the damage to the tire shop was not confirmed.
