Police said Medsker fatally struck Alex Michael Funk, 16, while he was walking on the southbound side of Santo Road near Antigua Boulevard around 11:50 p.m. on March 9.

The Serra High School student died at the scene from multiple blunt force injuries, according to the county medical examiner. Another person who was walking with Funk was able to jump out of the way to avoid the vehicle.

Following Funk's death, Serra High Principal Erica Renfree released a statement to students and parents:

“Parents: Late last night an accident occurred on Santo Road. The report was a 16-year-old was hit by a car and had passed away. I was notified at 5 a.m. this morning and have been working on this all day in order to give you information. Unfortunately we do not have any. There is no confirmation legally of the child’s identity or if the child is even a student here. However I understand a name is being said about who the victim might be. As soon as I receive legal confirmation of the information from the accident I will communicate with you further; even if that is over the weekend. Please make sure in your conversations with one another that you are aware of the impact it might have on the family of this child. Please be careful this weekend and regardless if it is a Serra student or not take care of one another and look out for each other. We are here if you need us. As soon as I know you will know. In addition, Monday we will have resources available to any students that may need it if it is confirmed it is indeed a Serra student. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at erenfree@sandi.net.”

A celebration of life service will be held for Funk at Good Samaritan Church, 4321 Eastgate Mall, at 11 a.m. March 25.
