SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California is on its way to leasing more than 16,000 hotel rooms to house the homeless during the coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Saturday that more than 4,000 homeless people have moved into the rooms already acquired, although his office couldn't specify where all of the people are.

There are concerns the virus could sweep through the state’s 150,000 homeless people.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made to test the homeless population for the virus.

In Los Angeles, teams will begin fanning out to offer expanded testing to the homeless, though LA County reported its highest daily death toll to date on Saturday.
