SAN DIEGO (KGTV)--Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, Dr. Beach is releasing his annual top 10 beach list, with Coronado coming in 9th place.
The list is the brainchild of coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University. He uses 50 criteria, including water and sand quality, and safety. Bonus points are awarded to beaches where smoking is prohibited.

2. Kapalua Bay Beach, Maui, HI
3. Ocracoke Lifeguard Beach, Outer Banks, NC
4. Grayton Beach State Park, Florida
5. Coopers Beach, Southampton, NY
6. Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, MA
7. Caladesi Island State Park, Clearwater, FL
8. Hapuna Beach State Park, Big Island, HI
9. Coronado Beach, San Diego, CA
10. Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, SC
