SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Thursday, a convicted sex offender released early from prison was arrested after police say he had sex with and sexually assaulted a minor in Santa Rosa.

According to police, detectives arrested Benjamin Thomas Shumate, 28, on multiple charges, including unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

Shumate is a registered sex offender on parole for a 2015 conviction in San Diego County. Shumate was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison after arranging to meet with a minor for sex.

Only a year later, in May of 2016, Shumate was released from prison and paroled to Sonoma County.

A recent investigation revealed that in June of 2018, Shumate met a 17-year-old girl on a dating app and, over the course of several months, met several times throughout Santa Rosa.

During one of the meetings, Shumate reportedly sexually assaulted the female teen. Shumate was arrested Thursday and booked into the Sanoma County Main Adult Detention Facility.
