Arrest made in Little Italy attempted sexual assault, vehicle theft

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police have arrested a man they say tried to sexually assault a woman in Little Italy before stealing her car. 

Police say the man, identified as Christopher Merron, 28, was arrested Monday on several charges, including assault with intent to commit a sex crime, brandishing a deadly weapon and auto theft. 

According to police, the incident happened on the 1700 block of India Street at 4:33 a.m. Sunday.

Police say the man walked into Cafe Italia while the victim was cleaning. The man then pushed the woman into a back room where he tried to sexually assault her while wielding a Bowie knife.

The woman was able to fight the suspect off before he grabbed her car keys and drove out of the area in her vehicle.
