(KGTV) -- The former cartel member once accused of kidnapping and torturing a DEA agent in 1985 was arrested Thursday in Mexico on a parole violation, the Department of Justice said.
Esequiel Godinez Cervantes, 77, was once investigated in the torture of agent Enrique Camarena Salazar in 1985, according to Televisa. Salazar’s body was later found on the outskirts of Guadalajara.
The Department of Justice told 10News Godinez was cleared of the charges involving the DEA agent.
The recent charge stems from October, when the United States District Court issued a bench warrant for Godinez. Documents say he had not reported to a probation officer and his whereabouts were unknown.
Godinez is in U.S. custody in Calexico, a DOJ public information officer said. Court documents show he was charged with a parole violation on Thursday in federal court.
According to Televisa, Godinez is a former member of the now-extinct Cartel of Guadalajara.
