SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Happy Cinco de Mayo, San Diego!

Throughout San Diego, residents will be celebrating with a variety of events on Friday, with some even continuing through the weekend.

Need a history lesson for why you're celebrating today? The May 5 holiday marks the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, during the Franco-Mexican War. About 6,000 French forces battled a group of roughly 2,000 men in the small town of Puebla de Los Angeles.

By the end of the battle, the French army retreated, having lost 500 men, while the Mexican forces had lost about 100. While the victory was not the most strategic, it's herald as a great symbolic victory in both Mexico and the United States, where the holiday also celebrates Mexican heritage and culture.

With that said, here's a look at some celebrations around San Diego:

Fiesta Cinco de Mayo in Old Town

Perhaps San Diego's biggest Cinco de Mayo celebration, Fiesta Cinco de Mayo packs three days of fun into Old Town. Friday kicks off with happy hour specials lasting well into the night, while Saturday and Sunday pick up with live music, dancing, wrestling, and historic activities. More information.
