Actor Jim Carrey's on-again, off-again girlfriend died of an apparent suicide in Sherman Oaks, authorities said Tuesday.
Cathriona White, 30, was found dead at a residence in the 15000 block of Briarwood Drive around 8 p.m. Monday, according to the coroner's office, which listed her first name as "Carthriona."
Coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said White apparently committed suicide with pills, but an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Carrey, 53, issued a statement saying he was "shocked and saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona."
"She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled," he said. "My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit by a lightning bolt."
According to the celebrity news website TMZ.com, White's body was discovered by two friends who went to check on her.
Carrey and White met in 2012 and dated a few months before breaking up. They had gotten back together in May but recently broke up again, and she had left a suicide note addressed to Carrey, TMZ reported.
On Sept. 24, White wrote on her Twitter account: "Signing off Twitter. I hope I have been a light to my nearest and dearest."
Carrey is perhaps best known for his roles in comic films such as "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Dumb & Dumber" and "Liar, Liar." He won back-to-back Golden Globe Awards in 1999-2000 for best actor in a drama for "The Truman Show" and in a comedy/musical for "Man on the Moon."
