NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - A woman was arrested Monday after National City police say she stole a car from a gas station with two children inside.

The incident happened at around 6 a.m. at the Valero gas station on East Main Street, police said.

10News learned a man parked his Nissan Rogue at the gas station's market and went inside to purchase an energy drink.

However, the man left the car's engine running and his two small children were in the back seat.

Store surveillance cameras show a woman approaching the Rogue just as the dad enters the market. The woman waits a few minutes before jumping into the vehicle as the man comes back.

As the woman starts to drive away, the man gives chase and then goes back into the store and asks someone to call 911.

Claudia Vargas, a supervisor at the market, said, "He was in shock, like crying and yelling, 'Call 911! My kids are … this lady ran away with my kids in the car!'"

Within minutes, officers spotted the Rogue and stopped it.

The woman was taken into custody and both children, who were unharmed, were returned to their father.
