BARRIO LOGAN -- Flames engulfed a tugboat that was docked in Barrio Logan, and when firefighters arrived they discovered a body inside the wheelhouse.

The cause of the fire, which began around 1:15 a.m., is under investigation. The tugboat was docked at a pier at 1444 Cesar E. Chavez Parkway.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue, the fire appears to have started on the first deck, which housed the galley, an office and a lounge area. The flames spread to the second deck sleeping quarters and the wheelhouse on the top deck.

The person found dead in the wheelhouse was an employee of the company that owns the tugboat, Pacific Tugboat Services.

Damage is estimated at $300,000.
