A motorist was injured Monday after driving onto a stretch of railway in Oceanside and stopping in the path of an oncoming commuter train.
The engineer of the westbound Sprinter train saw the car pull to a stop - - why the driver did so was unknown -- on the rails near the intersection of Temple Heights Drive and Oceanside Boulevard shortly after 8:30 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.
The train operator applied an emergency braking system but was unable to keep the locomotive from hitting the vehicle, Deputy Tamani Pugh said.
The motorist was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of trauma of undisclosed severity. No other injuries were reported.
