An Imperial Beach man is worried after he believes he found two cats that have been poisoned.

Alex Hershey says the feral cat he and his mom took care of in the 700 block of Georgia Street died Sunday.

“We’d been taking care of him for about 8 months, you know feeding him, making sure he was ok,” Hershey said.

They found the cat they named "Pepe" in the backyard writhing in pain and near death. Within an hour, the cat was dead.

“He suffered before he died and that’s what hit me hardest," Hershey said.

Hershey also says he noticed another dead cat down his street last week, with no apparent cause of death. He fears both cats were poisoned.

“They got into something nearby, maybe someone fumigated recently and put out poison and they got ahold of some rats or something like that and they ate them and that’s what killed them," Hershey said. "Or somebody actually gave them something."

Hershey did not report the incident to police because there was no concrete proof of anything wrong. He is now warning others to keep a close watch on their pets.

“There’s no words for it," Hershey said. "I just hope that it doesn’t happen to anybody else’s pet.”
