Starbucks Is Making A New Tie-dye Frappuccino—but Not For Long

If your regular Frappuccino just hasn’t been cutting it, don’t worry — Starbucks just debuted a brand-new tie-dye Frappuccino. But if you want to taste it, you’ll have to hurry, because it’s only available for a limited time, starting on July 10.

The Frappuccino is crème-based — in other words, no caffeine. So basically, it’s a milkshake. It’s made with whatever milk you’d like, ice and the crème Frappuccino syrup, plus vanilla whipped cream and natural food colorings to make the yellow, red and blue tie-dye swirls. The colors come from turmeric, red beet and spirulina powders, according to the nutrition facts. And it’s topped with colorful sugar dust, in case you forgot it was supposed to be tie-dye.

While some consumers might be excited for this pretty new treat, some Starbucks baristas are not quite so enthused, even if they do get to wear tie-dye during the limited release.

“It looks like it’s going to be the Unicorn Frappuccino all over again, which the company said they wouldn’t do again because of partner feedback,” one Starbucks employee told Business Insider in an interview. (Starbucks refers to its employees as partners.)

The Unicorn Frappuccino was the wildly popular pink-and-blue crème Frapp that debuted in 2017 and caused an uproar on social media — and in long lines at Starbucks locations around the country. Both Frappuccinos require multiple steps to create, which can cause a backlog of orders and increased wait times for customers.

One barista posted a photo of the new Frappuccino on Instagram to give her friends a sneak peek at the concoction. “It tastes like banana laffy taffy,” @xo_ri_ wrote in the caption:

Today’s anchors taste-tested the new drink on air, and Sheinelle Jones said it tasted like a banana milkshake (Starbucks has said the drink will have a tropical fruit flavor). The Frappuccino even looked pretty true-to-life, even under harsh studio lighting, and colorful drinks are almost never as pretty IRL.

Are you going to try it?
