As host of the ESPYS, former NFL star Peyton Manning was tasked with not just keeping the event flowing but lightening up the mood with a joke or three.

The famed quarterback's opening monologue at Wednesday night's show included a dig at Kevin Durant's decision to join the Golden State Warriors that quickly went viral.

Manning said: "Our gymnastics team was so dominant Kevin Durant told me he wants to play for them next year."

Immediately after Manning's joke, cameras cut to Durant sitting in the audience with an intense glare. Second later, cameras showed KD's former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook reacting with his fingers over his mouth.

As the show went on, Westbrook was honored as Best Male Athlete, while Durant won the award for Best Championship Performance.

Following the show, Durant went on Twitter and posted a simple emoji.

There's no word on if Durant was aware of Manning's joke ahead of time, but if he was, he certainly sold it well.
