If you’ve recently bought frozen chicken, you may want to check your kitchen freezer. That’s because Perdue Foods has issued a recall of 495 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken due to mislabeling and undeclared allergens, the company announced this week.

Bags of gluten-free chicken tenders were mistakenly packaged with chicken nuggets that contained wheat, a common allergen and one of the eight allergens that must be labeled on packaged foods, as required by U.S. law.

Perdue urges anyone who may have bought an affected bag of chicken to throw it away or return it to the store for a refund. Do not consume it.

The recalled product comes in 22-ounce resealable bags. It is labeled as Simply Smart Organics Chicken Breast Tenders Gluten-Free and has a “best by” date of August 29, 2020. To further identify the product, you can look for a UPC bar code of 0-72745-80489-2 and time stamps of 00:30 to 01:00. There will be an establishment number of P-33944 on the package label.

The bags of chicken were shipped to retail stores and distributors in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. And although no one has reportedly been harmed by the recalled product, the company issued the recall after receiving several complaints.

“After receiving a consumer inquiry, we conducted a comprehensive investigation and have isolated this to an error during a specific time frame during production,” said Jeff Shaw, Perdue’s vice president of food safety and quality, in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling this item that was sold in the freezer case.”

This is not the first recall Perdue Foods has issued this year. In May, the company recalled 31,703 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken products over concern that they were contaminated with pieces of bone material. In January, the company also issued a recall of 68,244 pounds of gluten-free chicken nuggets sold nationwide over fears of wood contamination.
