SAN DIEGO – A suicidal man who was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 805 in the North Park area prompted a dangerous pursuit that almost resulted in a head-on crash with a California Highway Patrol vehicle early Monday morning.

At about 2:30 a.m., CHP responded to several 911 calls about a Toyota Yaris going against traffic on I-805 south near Imperial Avenue.

According to CHP officers, the first arriving patrol vehicle came upon the wrong-way driver on I-805, south of University Avenue, and had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision.

A second patrol cruiser was able to cut off the suspect’s car and bring him to a stop in the lanes of I-805 south. Officers reportedly discovered the man using the app FaceTime to talk with his girlfriend. He allegedly asked officers to shoot him.

He was eventually peacefully taken into custody. He was not hurt.

Several marijuana products were found in his car, CHP said. The man was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.
