SAN DIEGO – Two vehicles sustained damage after they hit a giant crate that tumbled out of a semi-truck on the Interstate 5 freeway in the Old Town area late Monday night.

At around 10:30 p.m., a big rig traveling south on I-5 near Old Town Avenue dropped the crate onto the roadway.

According to California Highway Patrol, an Uber car got a piece of wood with nails stuck in its windshield, while the underbelly of a minivan was pierced by a piece of metal. Both drivers pulled over safely and none of the occupants of either vehicle were hurt. Both vehicles had to be towed.

Several other vehicles had to swerve to avoid hitting the crate until CHP officers could remove it from the freeway.

CHP was still searching for the semi that dropped the crate initially.
