SAN DIEGO – A couple on their way to a clinic because the mother was in labor were forced to pull over on Interstate 8 in Ocean Beach and give birth on the side of the freeway early Wednesday morning.
The birth occurred before 2:30 a.m. on eastbound I-8 near the beginning of the freeway at Nimitz and Sunset Cliffs boulevards.
With the mother in labor, the couple and their midwife were trying to drive to a birthing clinic. However, the baby just couldn’t wait. The couple pulled their SUV over in the center median, and with the midwife looking on, she gave birth on the freeway.
San Diego police and San Diego Fire-Rescue crews arrived soon after. At last report, mother and baby were healthy.
