MIRA MESA - Shoes and a backpack in the roadway, a hole in the windshield of a Honda; these are grim snapshots of a terrible accident.

It was just after six in the morning Thursday and still dark when the husband and wife were hit in the crosswalk on Mira Mesa Blvd. at Marbury Ave.

Penny Cavender watched as the couple was run down.

“He was not stopping, he was flying right through. And that's when the one lady was up in the air, landed over there. And she's not here anymore. And then the man went flying. And I thought he was dead. I did the sign of the cross, told the police officers that I thought he was dead,” he said.

The woman was killed at the scene, her husband was rushed to a hospital with head injuries and a broken leg. The driver stopped and was not immediately cited.

10News' Steve Fiorina spoke with witnesses at the scene and surveyed a nearby intersection locals say is just as dangerous.
