Last Friday's Mega Millions jackpot was $415 million, but after no winning ticket emerged, the jackpot jumped to $449 million on Tuesday. Then, with still no winning ticket declared, the jackpot eventually rose to tonight's $540 million.
Paula Otto, executive director of the Virginia Lottery and lead director for Mega Millions, said sales leading up to tonight's drawing exceeded expectations.
Friday's drawing will be the 35th since Mega Millions had a winner — the longest rollover stretch in the game's history.
Mega Millions ticket sales have exceeded $1 billion since March, when the last winner was declared.
Tickets are sold in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
