SAN DIEGO -- Big waves combined with Tuesday morning's high tide prompted lifeguards to close the Ocean Beach Pier, the wall around the Children's Pool in La Jolla and a few flooded coastal walkways.

City lifeguard officials reported coastal flooding on San Diego beaches amid a 12-foot swell and a 6.4-foot high tide shortly before 8:30 a.m.

A National Weather Service coastal flood advisory is set to expire at noon, and a high surf advisory will end at 8 p.m. Surf of 6 to 10 feet with sets to 12 feet this morning are expected to lower to 4 to 8 feet this afternoon.

Weather service forecasters said the potentially damaging surf pounding the county's beaches this morning would lower as the day progresses. However, the surf and associated rip currents may lead to hazardous swimming conditions throughout the day.
