LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - Some parents are demanding answers after a mother said her daughter's teacher ordered fourth-grade students to Google the mass shooting at a University City apartment complex.

The morning after the April 30 shooting, Joann told 10News the San Altos Elementary School teacher told her 10-year-old daughter and her classmates to use school computers to research the shooting and write a summary of what happened.

Joann said parents should have been the ones to decide if and when to talk to her children about the shooting.

She said she called the teacher after she found out, but he defended his actions, calling it a current event.

Joann hopes the incidents will lead to a new policy when it comes to what's allowed in class. She said the assistant superintendent told her the assignment was inappropriate.

10News reached out to the Lemon Grove Elementary School District, but have yet to hear back.
