(KGTV) - A man who admitted to killing a woman and escaped from a psychiatric hospital in Hawaii was caught in California Wednesday, authorities said.

Honolulu police said Randall Saito, 59, left the Hawaii State Hospital on the morning of Nov. 12. Police believe Saito went to a nearby park and called for a taxi.

Video footage captured from inside a cab shows a man believed to be Saito speaking to the driver and seemingly in a hurry to get to the airport.

According to authorities, Saito took a charter plane from Honolulu to Maui, and then took a Hawaiian Airlines flight to San Jose.

He was apprehended near Highway 99 in Stockton, Calif., Wednesday morning, according to San Joaquin County Sheriff's officials. Deputies said a tip from a taxi driver led them to the arrest.

Saito admitted to killing Sandra Yamashiro in 1979, but he was acquitted by reason of insanity. He was committed to the Hawaii State Hospital in 1981.
