LA PUENTE, Calif. (CNS) - An 83-year-old grandfather pushed a suspected burglar off his roof, ending an hours-long standoff between the intruder and sheriff's deputies in a Los Angeles-area neighborhood, authorities said Wednesday.

The standoff in La Puente occurred Tuesday afternoon in the 1400 block of Beckner Street, where the suspect was on top of homes and refusing to come down, authorities said.

Homeowner Wilford Burgess told ABC7 he was determined to get the man off of his home.

"You come to my house, you don't have to worry about him because I'll be all over it 'cause I'm going to load up," Burgess told the station.

Burgess said he took his neighbor's ladder and told deputies he was climbing onto the roof while his granddaughter recorded the confrontation.

"I said ... 'I'm going up on the roof, that sucker's coming off,'" Burgess told ABC7.

After the big push, the suspect was taken into custody and admitted to a hospital for a mental evaluation, authorities told the news station.

Capt. Tim Murakam of the sheriff's Industry Station took to Twitter to say Burgess pushed the suspect off the roof because he got "tired of the suspect's games."

"The grandpa did what we couldn't," Murakami said.
